American Horror Story Carnival

The fans were right all along! The fourth season of American Horror Story will be set at a carnival according to writer and co-executive producer Douglas Petrie.

Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the show, has remained tight lipped about the next season. Although he shared some casting news like Sarah Paulson and Jessica Lange’s return, the Glee co-creator still hasn’t revealed what exactly they will be doing.

However, thanks to Petrie’s “slip up”, we now know that the fans have been right all along. In a podcast with Nerdist Writers Panel, Petrie was asked about what they will be doing next to which he quickly responded “I can say nothing.” Then Moira Kirkland, a writer for Arrow and Castle who was also on the podcast said “Well I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard carnival.” Petrie responded “Yes — that was the, it — it does not have a title.”

The Podacast moderator, Ben Blacker, then pressed for more answers by saying “But that’s the setting?” and Petrie confirmed “That’s the idea, that’s very roughly the idea.” If you want to listen for yourself, you can check out the whole podcast here.

Before the slip up, all we know is that next season will be in two timelines, one in the 50’s and the other is still a mystery. Jessica Lange will have a German accent, she’ll play a Marlene Dietrich type character. Sarah Paulson is practicing a skill, and it will be shot in New Orleans or Santa Fe.

“I don’t know what to say. It’s a combination of things. It’s a combination of two time periods, with the main one being the 1950s. I don’t know. We haven’t started writing it yet, so I don’t really know the tone. I like that we had a lot of comedy in this year, and I like the comic characters, so I think that will remain.

We try and do the opposite of what we’ve done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I’m very excited!” Says Ryan Murphy about the next season of the hit FX show.

Sadly, Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, Gabourey Sidibe, Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga, Kathy Bates, and Angela Bassett haven’t been confirmed yet for the 4th offering of the horror anthology.

Also sad is Lange’s statement that the next season will be her last. “’It ends up being a lot of time during the year being committed to something.

“I haven’t done that for a long time. It’s like doing a stage play between the rehearsal and the run. This is a 6-month commitment every year. That will be four years in a row. I want to have more time to myself I guess.

Once it’s over and I have a full year ahead of me with nothing to do, who knows? It might not have been the best decision. But I think four years doing something is a sufficient amount of time.”

American Horror Story: (Carnival?) is set to return in October 2014.
